Our RV remodel

Welcome to our home…..

When we first purchased Blanche, she was as standard as they come in the way of RV decor.  She had the basic faux wood cabinets, ugly light green carpet through out, shiny vinyl wallpaper and ugly window treatments.  Since Frank truly believed we would only be utilizing Blanche as a camper, he was totally against any major renovations.  However, I desperately wanted her to look like home.  It only took 2 years to convice him that she needed an upgrade.  We are very proud of the result.   Unfortunately,   I do not have a lot of before pictures. There are still a few projects that need to get done for her remodel.

As it such a small space for 4 people and a dog, I needed everythng to be really light and bright.  My absolute favorite color is turquoise and my favorite theme is the beach.  We utilized Behr Marquee White Satin paint for all of the cabinets.   I would still like to paint the black frames of all the windows in the rig, specifically in the bedroom.

The tour won’t take very long.  Let’s start in the Master Bedroom.

I wanted to have a beach feel in this room.  I used apartment wallpaper for the back wall and lower parts of the walls and bed.  It was fairly easy to apply, other then the small spaces.  It is very similar to contact paper, but is readjustable.    To get rid of the out of date gold hardware,  we used a hammered gray rustoleum spray paint for all of the cabinet handles.   In such a small space, we found it necessary to have a separate “office” area from the main living space.   We utilized a sanded piece of plywood for a desk that lays between the window trim and the bed.  The purple chair is called a back jack chair and it is an amazing verstile piece of furniture.   We removed all the standard RV valances and old shelving.  These were replaced with curtains and pine shelving to house books, the printer and TV.  A set of Ikea trones are on the side wall to hold a variety of school work and electronic devices.

Now, lets move out to the living area.  The tour will be rather quick here, as it includes the kitchen, dining room, foyer and living room all in one inclusive multi purpose space.    My two favorite renovations in this area is the amazing vinyl floor and the handmade cherry bench.  I was so happy the day we pulled out the 17 year old green carpet.  The amount of dirt and sand was only matched by the number of staples holding it down.   This change alone, made our RV feel like a home and not a camper.  We then made the decision to remove the standard dinette table and bench. Unfortunately we had to leave one bench in place, as it houses our fresh water tank.   Our rig does not have slides, so removing the dinette really made it seem much larger.  We use two long TV style folding tables as needed, for meals, games and school work.

The  cherry  bench was brought along from our home and is one of our favorite pieces that we could not seem to part with.   We painted one wall in the living space a teal color to contrast the white cabinets.

The couch and the cushions of the dinette are pretty ugly, but continue to be a necessary evil in our home.  We have not been able to find a suitable replacement couch or any other options to house our fresh water tank.  I typically change the coverings on these every few weeks when I get bored,  for a variety of color and texture.   We also utilize the green blanket to block the cold air from the cab area, which also serves as a storage closet for a variety of musical instruments when we are stationary.

The Kitchen is pretty standard layout for a Class C motor home.  We rarely use our propane stove or oven, so that remains covered with a large cutting board.  Similar to the bedroom, we utilized white Behr paint for all the cabinets and gray hammered paint for all of the hardware and fixtures.  We replaced all of the overhead lights with LED light fixtures and installed a few under cabinet LED strips in this area as well.  We replaced the kitchen sink faucet with a standard kitchen faucet from Home Depot.  It was a pretty easy job and did not require any special adaptations.  You may think you have to purchase things specific for RV’s, but that is not true!

The birch tree decorations on the kitchen walls were simple wall decals purchased from Amazon.  Frank added a counter extender next to the sink by using a large bamboo cutting board and two locking brackets.   The air conditioner cover was painted with a glossy white enamel.

The fridge was painted with black chalkboard paint.  Soon after painting it, we discovered that any chalk drawings quickly rubbed off on our clothing as we walked by.   This problem was solved by using white board stickers.  Our next big project will be to replace the RV fridge with a residential apartment size one. I am SO SO SO excited for that update!

The 2nd bedroom, aka the bunk over the cab.   Both of our girls share this area.  It is close to the size of a king size bed and they both fit fairly comfortably up in the space.  Each girl was allowed to pick the color for their side of the “bedroom”.   Frank installed pine shelving for each girl on their respective sides to house all of their books and treasures.   We used an IKEA curtain wire and hooks for the curtain across the space to block their mess.

I did not include pictures of our bathroom and shower.  As of this writing, we have not updated the bath area at all.  That will be added at a later date.

Thanks so much for visiting our home!  If you are thinking of doing a remodel of an older RV, please feel free to send us your questions.
